The Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation was established as a federal Crown corporation on July 1, 1990. As a national institution and member of the Canadian Heritage Portfolio, the Corporation is responsible for preserving and protecting Canada’s scientific and technological heritage, and for promoting and sharing knowledge about that heritage. The Corporation comprises three museums: the Canada Science and Technology Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum. Through their research, exhibitions, programs and Web sites, the museums tell the stories of Canadian ingenuity and achievement in science and technology, and demonstrate how these accomplishments have contributed to the building of our country. By preserving and celebrating the scientific and technological heritage of Canada, the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation fosters a sense of identity and pride on the part of all Canadians in their achievements in science and technology.

The Director is the Chief Executive Officer and, under the direction of the Board, is responsible for providing corporate leadership for the management of the Corporation’s resources and assets and for the effectiveness and efficiency of its operations in meeting its mandated objectives.

The ideal candidate should possess a degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of relevant education, job-related training and/or experience. Corporate leadership experience at the chief executive officer or senior executive level is sought. The candidate should possess experience in financial management and revenue generation, as well as significant experience in major fundraising initiatives and establishing collaborative relationships. The ideal candidate would also have experience in strategic and high-performance management as well as experience in reporting to, serving and engaging a board.

The candidate should possess knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities for Canadian cultural institutions and of the federal government’s policy agenda and how it relates to national museums. He/she would have general knowledge of the legislative framework, mandate and activities of the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation. The ideal candidate should also be knowledgeable about sound management and corporate governance, as well as risk management principles and practices. Knowledge of the cultural, patrimonial and/or recreational tourism sectors would be considered an asset, as would knowledge of the Canadian science and technology, aviation and space, and/or agriculture and food sectors.

The ideal candidate would be an innovative, entrepreneurial and strategic leader who could provide the corporate leadership, vision and strategic direction needed to ensure the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation is able to carry out its mandate and achieve its objectives. In addition to the ability to identify, analyze and define priorities and strategies, the candidate would be an energetic, visionary leader motivated by challenge and growth with the ability to spearhead national outreach initiatives and actively market and promote the Museum’s brand to audiences across Canada. Possessing superior interpersonal skills, sound judgment and integrity, the ideal candidate would be able to focus the energies and talents of the organization’s employees and motivate them to achieve corporate objectives. The candidate would demonstrate the ability to develop effective working relationships with the Board of Trustees, the Museum’s management, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and her Office, the Deputy Minister of Canadian Heritage, and the Museum’s key stakeholders and partners. Superior communications skills, both written and oral, are desired as is the ability to act as the Canada Science and Technology Museums Corporation’s spokesperson in dealing with the Government, the media, the Museum’s stakeholders and partners, and other organizations. The candidate should also possess superior analytical skills and adhere to high ethical standards.

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.

The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate to the National Capital Region or to a location within reasonable commuting distance, and be prepared to travel as required across Canada and abroad.

Export Development Canada (EDC), a federal Crown corporation, is Canada’s export credit agency, offering innovative financing, insurance and risk management solutions to help Canadian exporters and investors expand their international business. EDC’s strength in financial services, innovative insurance and bonding products, international networks, and in-depth analysis of global economic conditions help tailor solutions to the needs of Canadian exporters and investors. Every year, EDC’s knowledge and partnerships are used by more than 7 400 Canadian companies and their global customers in up to 200 markets. Approximately 80% of EDC’s customers are small- and medium-sized businesses.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and Chief Executive Officer sets the course for EDC and is accountable for providing strategic guidance and leadership in the execution of EDC’s mandate and the management of its assets, balancing risk and reputation; considering the views of EDC’s diverse stakeholders; facilitating greater capacity and confidence among Canadian exporters and investors; and partnering with other financial institutions in support of the commercial activities of exporters that directly and indirectly benefit all Canadians. He/she is responsible for the financial sustainability and results of the Corporation.

The ideal candidate would possess a degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline (e.g. finance, economics) or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job-related training and/or experience. The position requires the incumbent to possess senior executive level management experience leading diverse and complex commercial organizations, ideally with some international exposure.

The candidate would have proven experience in a senior leadership position in either the private or public sector, and ideally in both, and experience dealing with senior representatives of business and government. Experience in managing the risks associated with EDC’s major lines of business and experience in reporting to or serving a board of directors would be considered assets.

The ideal candidate would possess knowledge of EDC’s mandate, role and responsibilities and of the Government of Canada’s trade objectives and economic agenda; strong knowledge of international markets, including a grasp of the economic structures and geo-political forces within Canada’s key and emerging export and investment markets; and knowledge of the global trade financing industry (including EDC’s international counterparts). The position also requires knowledge of the financial disciplines associated with the development and management of export insurance and financing instruments, as well as knowledge of corporate lending practices, investments and transaction structures. Sound knowledge of the Canadian export sector, the key leaders, emerging trends and competitive forces, and challenges and opportunities for small and medium enterprises, is also required.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to demonstrate strong and ethical leadership in meeting EDC’s mandate and in promoting the organization’s values. He/she will possess the demonstrated ability for business development and customer orientation, as well as the demonstrated ability to anticipate, assess and address business risks, particularly as they relate to complex financial transactions and corporate social responsibility. The position requires the ability to exercise sound judgement and significant decision-making skills in analyzing and resolving complex contract and business matters, the ability to apply strategic thinking skills when leading corporate planning and policy-making activities, as well as the ability to focus the energies and talents of EDC employees and to motivate them to achieve corporate objectives. The individual will have the ability to develop effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, the Minister and his/her office, the Deputy Minister and EDC’s partners and stakeholders. Superior communication skills, both written and oral, and the ability to act as a spokesperson in representing EDC with stakeholders, media, public institutions, governments and other organizations are required.

To achieve EDC’s objectives and carry out his/her mandate, the President and Chief Executive Officer will be a strategic and innovative leader with integrity and impartiality. He/she will possess high ethical standards, sound judgement, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

TRANSPORTATION APPEAL TRIBUNAL OF CANADA

Chairperson (full-time position)

Salary range: $139,900–$164,500
Location: National Capital Region

The Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada (TATC) is an independent adjudicative body established in June 2003 pursuant to the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada Act. Its mandate is to provide an independent process of review of administrative and enforcement actions, including the suspension and cancellation of licenses, certificates and other documents of entitlement, the issuance of railway orders, and the imposition of administrative monetary penalties taken under various federal transportation acts.

The Chairperson is a full-time member and is the chief executive officer of the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada. The Chairperson has supervision over, and direction of, the work of the members and staff of the Tribunal, including apportionment of work among its members, assignment of members to hear matters brought before the Tribunal, conduct of the work of the Tribunal, management of internal affairs, and conduct of review and appeal hearings.

The ideal candidate would have a degree from a recognized university or a combination of equivalent education, job-related training and experience. A degree in law would be considered an asset.

The ideal candidate would have experience in one of the federally regulated transportation sectors (aeronautics, rail or marine). Significant leadership experience at a senior executive level within the private or public sector, including managing human and financial resources, is desired. The ideal candidate will also have experience in the interpretation and application of legislation in an administrative tribunal environment. Experience in the operation of an adjudicative tribunal as well as experience in rendering decisions or in presenting cases before an adjudicative tribunal would be considered an asset.

The ideal candidate would possess significant knowledge in one or more of the federally regulated transportation sectors. They would have knowledge of the mandate and operations of the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada as well as knowledge of the relevant federal transportation legislation (the Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada Act, the Aeronautics Act, the Canadian Aviation Regulations, the Railway Safety Act, the Canadian Transportation Act, the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, and the Marine Transportation Security Act). The candidate should have knowledge of the responsibilities of leading and managing an adjudicative tribunal and of conducting administrative hearings as well as knowledge of administrative law, principles of natural justice and the practices followed by administrative tribunals in Canada. The ideal candidate will also be financially literate and have knowledge of sound governance and management principles and practices.

The ideal candidate would be able to provide intellectual and strategic leadership to the Tribunal in order to develop and promote its vision and to define the objectives and strategies of the organization. Sound management and leadership skills, in order to motivate members and staff and to ensure the Tribunal adheres to the highest standards of accountability and transparency, are sought. The chairperson would have the ability to interpret various statutes and related regulations in an adjudicative context, and to assess the relevance of Tribunal precedent in order to render decisions that are fair and equitable. The ability to effectively conduct hearings of an adjudicative tribunal and to write clear and well-reasoned decisions is desired. The ideal candidate would possess superior communication skills, both oral and written, in order to represent the Tribunal in various public settings in the interest of creating awareness and understanding of the Tribunal’s mandate.

The Chairperson would possess leadership and be a person of sound judgement and integrity. He/she adheres to high ethical standards, possesses superior interpersonal skills, and possesses the qualities of impartiality, flexibility, fairness, and tact.

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
